Should you travel with a suitcase or backpack?

 Before we go into the solo trip packing list, consider this age-old controversy among solo travellers: Should you travel with a suitcase or a backpack?The fact is that both approaches are excellent in some instances but less so in others. To put it another way, it all boils down to personal choice. Once you've decided on a bag style, it's doubtful that you'll alter your mind a few years down the line.Having said that, you can still make an educated choice between a suitcase and a backpack. Everything you need to know is right here.

Advantages while travelling with a suitcase:

I have long been an advocate of traveling and packing light. One of the main reasons that I design reversible/multifunctional clothing is because they make traveling and packing light much easier.When you pack for your trips, the majority of the items packed is usually what you would wear, if you can pack less clothing, you will save a lot of space in your luggage.

"Traveling light was the best decision I made when I started traveling. I’ve saved myself money, time, stress, and backache. Most importantly, I’ve gained freedom—I can pack all my belongings in ten minutes and head off on the next adventure." - Erin McNeaney

Many individuals swear by taking a luggage with them whenever they travel, whether alone or with others. And, to be honest, they have good cause.
  • Ease of packing: It's often simpler to load all of your luggage into a suitcase than a backpack, and it's easier to find what you need while your suitcase is open on the ground.
  • Convenience: Due to the considerable road infrastructure available, a suitcase is more handy than a backpack, especially in economically sophisticated nations.
  • Sturdiness: Suitcases tend to be sturdier than backpacks, especially if they have a hard shell.
  • Less stress: Life with less is simpler. One bag is easier to keep track of on hectic travel days than multiple bulky suitcases. You can move faster and navigate new cities without standing out as much. You can walk around searching for the best accommodation, squeeze on a crowded bus, and run to catch a train—tasks that would be stressful, or impossible, with a large amount of luggage.
  • More Security: When you only have one bag to worry about, it’s easier to keep it safe. My backpack is never out of my sight on transport, whereas large luggage is usually stored away from passengers. Whenever you check in luggage, especially when you have flight connections, there’s a risk the airline could lose your bag.

Finding a good suitcase:

Choosing the best luggage for your vacation is more simpler than you would believe. There are several factors to consider, but it's simple if you know what to look for.

Keep an eye on the following:

  • 360-degree wheels: Say what you will about travelling with a suitcase, but it’s convenient. Having a suitcase with wheels that spin in all directions changes your life as a traveller in ways that you can’t imagine if you haven’t experienced it yourself;
  • Sections: The more compartments your suitcase has, the easier it is to organise, pack and unpack your baggage;
  • Weight: A lightweight suitcase is generally easier to travel with, and it may also help you avoid overweight baggage fees on travel days;
  • Security: You’ll want a way to safely lock away your belongings if you have to leave your suitcase unattended or check it for your flight;
  • Hardside vs. softside: Suitcases with a hard shell are more weather resistant and offer more protection, while suitcases with a soft exterior are more flexible and easier to stow away. Think about your travel needs and choose accordingly.

Advantages of Travelling with a Backpack:

Of then, there isn't much of an argument if no one disagrees with the ardent suitcase travellers. Backpacks are the more common alternative, especially among daring lone travellers, and they're gaining popularity.
But why are travel bags gaining popularity? Here are some of the most prevalent reasons why single travellers prefer to travel with a backpack rather than a suitcase:

  • Manoeuvrability: Backpackers are often more mobile than suitcase travellers. They can climb stairs, stroll on unpaved roads, and leap over puddles with ease, whereas suitcase travellers cannot.
  • Versatility: Because your valuables are more spread out throughout all these compartments in a backpack, it is simpler to find inventive ways to preserve your garments wrinkle-free and prevent being pickpocketed.
  • Safety: When your valuables are strapped to your body, it is much simpler to keep a watch on them.

Finding a good backpack

Just as it is vital to know what to look for in a luggage, you must be aware of the pros and disadvantages of various backpacks in order to make an informed selection.
I'm a backpack traveller myself, and here are some things I look for in a bag:
  • Weight: Because you will be carrying your luggage on your back, you want your backpack to be as light as possible to minimise injuries.
  • Physical support: I recommend purchasing a backpack in-store since you can see how the backpack conforms to your body and literally feel the suspension, weight distribution, and cushioning.
  • Volume: The size of the backpack you use is logically determined by the amount of luggage you have. You're not going to use the same bag for a 3-day city break as you would for a 6-month round-the-world tour.
  • Access: The majority of backpacks are accessible from the top, however an increasing number of side-access backpacks have lately been produced. This makes packing and unpacking your items more easier, which is why a side-loading backpack is ideal for a vacation with many stops.
